Meet Taylor, a dedicated mum to Vin, a bright and spirited 3-year-old child. Like many parents, Taylor wanted to find the best support for her son, helping him grow and develop in a way that celebrated his unique abilities. That’s when she discovered PlayConnect+, a playgroup designed specifically for children with disabilities.
For 3-year-old Vin, attending PlayConnect+ has made a world of difference. “Vin has really blossomed in the playgroup,” Taylor says with a smile. “When we first joined, he was shy and struggled with social interactions, but now he’s more confident and engaged. It’s incredible to see him thrive in an environment where he’s accepted for who he is.”
Amanda, the Lead Educator for PlayConnect+, explains that a key to the program’s success is its structured, supportive environment. “I aim to provide a really solid structure where there’s a high level of predictability and interest-based learning activities set out so that children instantly feel comfortable when they come here,” Amanda shares. “It helps them feel understood and safe, which is vital for learning. When children are relaxed and having a good time, they can really begin to engage and develop new skills.”
For Vin, this approach has been transformative. Through structured play and sensory activities, Vin is gaining vital social and communication skills. “It’s amazing to watch him interact with other children,” Taylor shares. “He’s learning to share, take turns, and express himself more clearly. He’s become more independent, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Amanda also highlights how the PlayConnect+ program supports not just the children, but the parents too. “By having this space where the children are comfortable and relaxed in their playing, the parents also get an opportunity to talk to each other and develop their little communities,” she explains. “As a parent and carer myself, I know how vital that community is. Parents often find the right therapies and support services through each other. It’s a chance to share experiences and feel like you’re not alone in your journey.”
PlayConnect+ is unique in its focus on both the child and the parent. It’s not just about providing a safe space for children to play – it’s about fostering a community where parents can find support and connect with others who truly understand their experiences. “It’s a relief to be surrounded by other parents who truly get it,” says Taylor. “It’s not about fitting into a mould; it’s about embracing each child’s individual needs and strengths.”
But the support didn’t stop there. Alongside PlayConnect+, Taylor also joined the MyTime Peer Support Program, which is designed to provide emotional and practical support for parents and carers of children with disabilities. Through this program, Taylor gained a sense of belonging, shared experiences, and helpful advice from other parents who are on similar journeys.
“The MyTime group has been a lifesaver,” Taylor explains. “It’s a space where we can talk openly, share stories, and help each other with tips on everything from navigating the NDIS to just getting through the tough days. It’s not only about the children—it’s about supporting each other as parents.”
Amanda emphasises the importance of inclusivity within PlayConnect+ as well. “Being inclusive is about saying that parent and child are seen for who they are and what they need. My first question to any new parent is, ‘What can I do to help you?’ That instantly helps them feel included because I’m listening to them. I make sure that I’m doing the best by both the parent and the child, because these parents know their children best,” Amanda explains.
Thanks to both PlayConnect+ and MyTime, Taylor feels more confident and empowered as a mum. She’s seen Vin’s development flourish, and she’s found a supportive community that’s been instrumental in her journey.
“I’ve gained so much from both programs,” Taylor reflects. “Not just in terms of practical support, but in terms of emotional strength. I feel empowered as a mum, and I know I’m not alone.”
Taylor’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the importance of finding the right support. PlayConnect+ and MyTime have been life-changing for her, offering a safe, inclusive environment where both she and her child can grow, learn, and thrive together.
