Intergenerational Playgroups

Timeless Play Intergenerational Playgroups bring together three generations – seniors, children and their parents. Interacting with seniors adds a new dimension to the playgroup experience for children, and can be especially enriching for children who don’t have access spending time with their grandparents.

Located in both aged care environments and community settings, these playgroups are a joyful celebration between multiple generations.

Timeless Play encompasses Playgroup NSW’s Intergenerational programs and services that are a committed response to reducing the impact social isolation can have on the overall health and wellbeing of older Australians and Older Aboriginals.

Intergenerational Models and Opportunities

Playgroup NSW offers a multi-module approach to increasing accessibility and encourage establishment of Intergenerational programs across the state. Our models include.

• Volunteer-led models in the community run by parents, carers or grandparents living in community
• Intergenerational Playgroup Training – Playgroup NSW provides training for aged care providers, early education and care and other services to support the establishment and delivery of Intergenerational Playgroups from their service trains
• Bespoke packages – Playgroup NSW can deliver a supported intergenerational model from your service

What are the benefits of Intergenerational Playgroups?

Research into benefits of Intergenerational playgroup programs (IPP) have demonstrated they can provide meaningful engagement for all participants, increase self-esteem and develop a sense of connection and friendships within safe and secure environments. They can increase activity engagement, social inclusion, decrease depression/anxiety and assist in cognitive/physical maintenance (Source: Skropeta CM, 2014).

They promote older Australian’s ability to contribute to community regardless of age, and include their values, insights and experiences as decision makers. They enable older Australians to meet with other older Australians living in their community that share in their own unique values, meaning and purpose to create lasting friendships and connections.
