Media Release 20 March 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In recognition of National Playgroup Week, Playgroup NSW hosted a special event at Parliament House on 20 March, bringing together politicians, key community leaders, families, and early childhood advocates to celebrate the importance of playgroups in shaping the future of children and families. The event was spearheaded by The Hon. Minister Kate Washington and Playgroup NSW CEO Emily Caska.
At the event, Minister Washington highlighted the significant role of playgroups in the early development of children. “Never underestimate the power of playgroups. They are such a critical element in every parent’s parenting journey. And often they are seen as places for children – I get that. But they are so important for parents too.”
The event featured a panel of lived experience speakers who shared their stories about the positive impact playgroups have had on their families. These stories highlight the importance of engaging dads, supporting culturally and linguistically diverse communities, children with a disability and non-traditional carers such as grandparents.
During the event, Taylor, a first-time mum to 3-year-old Vin, shared her personal experience with a playgroup designed for children with disabilities or developmental delays. “The most rewarding part of being involved in playgroup is the family atmosphere. It’s really welcoming here, and everyone listens to you when you need support,” she said.
In addition to the event at Parliament House, Playgroup NSW also used National Playgroup Week as an opportunity to announce several key initiatives aimed at strengthening the support system for families and children across New South Wales.
These included:
- The release of Playgroup NSW’s Statement of Commitment to Child Safety & Wellbeing.
- The announcement of the establishment of:
- The NSW Committee for Children and Families.
- The NSW Committee for Parents and Carers of Children with Disability.
- The release of a jointly commissioned research report on play in partnership with LEGO Australia.
Emily Caska, CEO of Playgroup NSW, reflected on the significance of National Playgroup Week: “It is heartening to see so many people come together in the house of the people at NSW Parliament to celebrate the power of play. Playgroups are at the core of early childhood development, where children explore, learn, and build connections. This week is a reminder of how vital it is to nurture these spaces for our future generations.”
Throughout National Playgroup Week, Playgroup NSW has encouraged communities to visit NationalPlaygroupWeek.org.au to learn more about workshops, initiatives, and how to support and engage with playgroups across the state.
