10 calm ways to discipline your child

Content provided by Kinderling Radio, a Playgroup NSW media partner

Children get into trouble. It is an unwritten rule of childhood. As a parent, the way you react to your child’s misbehaviour can make a difference between a lesson learned and a tantrum.

"Discipline does not have to mean punishment. It is all about helping children to behave appropriately and understand the basics of good behaviour. In fact, a lot of it is built on talking and listening and works best when parents have a warm, loving relationship with their children," explains Julie Green, the Executive Director of Raising Children Network.

Julie, shares her helpful advice for handling your child’s inappropriate behaviours in a smart and sensitive way.

We all have loose nappies lying around; in the cupboard, the car or at the grandparents’ house. Why not do something meaningful with your spare nappies? From May 5 - 19 inclusive, The Nappy Collective is calling on families across Australia to help mums in crisis and families in need through the donation of their leftover, unused, disposable nappies.

The May Collective spans numerous cities and towns across NSW and over 60 drop points will collect hundreds of thousands of nappies (largely destined for landfill). The Nappy Collective will then sort and redistribute the collected nappies to over 40 organisations across the state that support mothers affected by domestic violence, as well as families in crisis or in need. These organisations include Dandelion Support Network, Barnardos and The Benevolent Society; all of whom greatly appreciate the wonderful generosity of the local communities.

Please visit www.thenappycollective.com and choose the Collection tab on the main menu bar to find your nearest drop point.

Creative art tips for toddlers

Content provided by Crayola, a Playgroup NSW partner

Children love to experiment with sound like voices and instruments, to discover how art materials and tools work (dough, markers, drums, streamers), and to explore body movements (dance, facial expressions, fine-motor skills).

Give your toddler the chance to try a wide range of art activities that are not only fun, but extremely beneficial to their development. Children's imaginations blossom through art and music!

You don't need to be an expert to create some amazing creative art activities for your child! Using materials you already have at home plus some time and space, you can create the perfect environment for your child to play.

The importance of socialisation for babies

Babies are instantly social, and their first impressions count.

The earlier babies can enjoy rewarding relationships, the better their prospects to progress socially and emotionally, experts say.

From the intimate exchanges of the family world they first encounter, to the gradual exposures to the world at large, babies live and learn by the relationships reflected to them and their sense of belonging.

Socialisation is essentially how we bring infants into a culture of finding “rewarding engagements” with another person, Professor Marc de Rosnay, Head of Wollongong University’s Early Start program, says.
